Justice has been served for the voiceless victims of heinous abuse, thanks to the efforts of law enforcement and dedicated animal advocates. The sentencing of Michael Edward Bobbitt and Christy Bobbitt on charges of bestiality, sexual assault, and aggravated animal cruelty marks a crucial victory for animal welfare.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Department, aided by In Defense of Animals, executed a search and seizure order on Nov. 11, 2022, leading to the arrest of Michael Bobbitt. Evidence, including a computer, was confiscated, shedding light on the horrifying acts perpetrated against innocent animals. Four dogs, survivors of unspeakable cruelty, were rescued from the Bobbitts’ property and entrusted to the care of In Defense of Animals’ Hope Animal Sanctuary in Grenada.

Michael Bobbitt faced charges of felony “unnatural intercourse with a beast” and sexual battery against his wife, while Christy Bobbitt was charged with multiple counts of the same offense. Both defendants pleaded guilty to aggravated animal cruelty, a testament to the severity of their crimes.

The sentencing of Michael Bobbitt to twelve years of supervised probation house arrest, with consecutive terms for each count, and Christy Bobbitt to nine years of intensive supervised probation house arrest sends a clear message: such egregious acts of violence against animals will not be tolerated. Moreover, the Bobbitts are prohibited from ever having contact with animals and must wear ankle monitors, ensuring they pose no further threat.

Sharon Stone, Operations Manager at In Defense of Animals’ Hope Animal Sanctuary, expressed relief at providing safety and refuge to the abused dogs, “Everyone deserves to be safe in their own home, and we’re glad to have given that to these four abused dogs. Animal abuse of any kind should be reported and dealt with seriously, and we’re glad to have supported the rescue and pursuit of justice for these victims.”
