A giant natural gas power plant proposed for Ohio is being pitched as a quick fix for rising electricity demand. According to Rob Verdonck at Bloomberg, the facility would total about 9.2 gigawatts, enough to power millions of homes on the PJM grid.
It is easy to see the appeal. Data centers, new factories, and more electric cars all push demand up. Power prices have also climbed in many places. So politicians reach for big projects that look simple on paper.
But gas is not simple. A plant this size would likely run for decades to pay back its costs. That can lock communities into more fossil fuel use just as cleaner options get cheaper. It can also add more methane leakage across the supply chain, which warms the planet fast.
There is a local angle too. More combustion usually means more smog forming Pollution, even with modern controls. That can hit health in nearby towns, especially for kids and older adults. It can also pressure wildlife habitat through pipelines, new roads, and water use.
Supporters say this is about reliability. Yet the same reliability can come from a mix of grid upgrades, efficiency, demand response, storage, and renewables. Those tools reduce bills by cutting waste, not by burning more fuel.
If leaders want to protect the environment and keep the lights on, they should prioritize the fastest clean wins first. That includes weatherizing homes, scaling solar and wind, and building transmission. It also means shifting everyday choices toward plant based meals, which lower emissions and help animals at the same time.
Ask your local officials and utilities to invest in clean power now, and back policies that speed it up.
