Italy Has a Unique Solution to Goat Overpopulation on Remote Island

Alicudi, an Italian island in the Aeolian archipelago off Sicily’s coast, is facing an unusual problem: an overpopulation of wild goats. With their numbers surpassing those of the human residents sixfold, the goats have begun encroaching on inhabited areas, causing damage to vegetation, gardens, and even homes. In response, the mayor of Alicudi, Riccardo Gullo, has devised a novel solution: offering the goats up for adoption to anyone willing to take them in.

The “Adopt a Goat” initiative aims to address the issue humanely and compassionately. Rather than resorting to culling the animals, which is often seen as a drastic and inhumane measure, the mayor hopes to find new homes for the goats where they can be cared for and managed responsibly. The initiative is open to all, with no restrictions on who can adopt or how many goats they can take.

The idea has already sparked interest, with inquiries coming from various quarters, including a farmer on Vulcano island who sees potential in incorporating the goats into his cheese production. This response indicates that there is genuine interest in helping alleviate the issue while also finding practical uses for the animals.

The origins of Alicudi’s goat population date back two decades when they were introduced to the island, likely to breed them. However, the plan was abandoned, leaving the goats to thrive on their own. Over the years, their numbers have swelled, posing a growing challenge to the island’s ecosystem. While the initiative is met with enthusiasm, there are logistical challenges to overcome. Alicudi’s rugged terrain, characterized by cliffs, makes transportation difficult. Some residents question how the goats will be safely transported from the mountainous areas to potential adopters, suggesting that helicopters might be necessary for the task.

Despite the challenges, the “Adopt a Goat” initiative represents a creative and compassionate approach to managing the goat population in Alicudi. Engaging the community and encouraging responsible stewardship of the environment, offers hope for a great solution to a very unique problem.

  1. Free for adoption will open them up to abuse. Goats cheese farmers culls the baby goats once the mothers gave birth. Rather distribute them to FARM SANCTUARIES where they can live their lives in peace.
