The island of Alicudi in Sicily’s Aeolian archipelago has found itself grappling with an overpopulation of feral goats. What began as a few animals brought by farmers two decades ago has spiraled into a significant issue, with the goat population now outnumbering the island’s human inhabitants sixfold. As the goats roam freely, their unchecked presence has wreaked havoc on the island.
In response to this dilemma, Mayor Riccardo Gullo devised a unique solution – an “adopt a goat” initiative aimed at relocating the animals to farms on neighboring islands. However, what started as a local endeavor quickly gained global attention, with offers pouring in from around the world, including Europe, the US, and Nigeria. With demand far surpassing the island’s goat population, careful selection and logistical planning have become paramount.
The task of capturing and transporting the goats falls upon Giovanni Dell’Acqua, the director of rural development in Messina for Sicily’s regional council. It’s a daunting challenge given the rugged terrain of Alicudi, characterized by steep cliffs and rocky landscapes. Dell’Acqua and his team are devising a comprehensive capture plan, considering methods such as ensnaring the goats in nets or luring them with food toward enclosures.
However, the operation isn’t without its hurdles. The goats, accustomed to their freedom for two decades, may resist capture, posing a potential risk to both themselves and the residents. Furthermore, the logistics of transporting the animals from the mountainous terrain of Alicudi to the port for shipment to Sicily’s mainland present additional challenges.
Despite the complexities involved, the goal remains clear – to capture and relocate as many goats as possible before the onset of the tourist season. However, the adoption process is selective, with preference given to experienced farmers who can provide a suitable environment for the animals. This ensures that the goats are placed in environments where they can thrive and contribute positively to agricultural practices.
