A police raid in Delhi has put a harsh spotlight on how risky climate advocacy can be in India. Investigators from the Enforcement Directorate searched the home of Harjeet Singh and Jyoti Awasthi, the co founders of Satat Sampada, also known as Nature Forever. Officials allege the pair received nearly £500,000 from overseas groups to promote a fossil fuel non proliferation treaty inside India.

According to Damien Gayle at The Guardian, the agency says those payments were reported as consultancy work and sales linked to the group’s public facing business. The agency also claims the treaty agenda could expose India to international legal challenges and weaken energy security. During the search, officers reported finding alcohol above legal limits, and Singh was later arrested and then bailed.

Singh and Awasthi deny wrongdoing and say the allegations are baseless. Still, their case lands in a wider pattern of pressure on civil society, including thousands of suspended licenses for foreign funding. When governments frame climate work as a national security threat, it can chill speech and weaken accountability.

This matters far beyond one couple. Fossil fuel expansion locks in Pollution that harms health and pushes heat and flooding onto people with the fewest resources. It also damages the ecosystems that animals depend on, from rivers to forests. And because India is a major energy player, any crackdown on debate echoes across the planet.

A fair transition needs open debate, clear rules on funding, and real investment in clean power. If you care about the Earth, stand up for climate defenders and keep choosing plant based and vegan options that cut demand for fossil fuels.
