Hurricane Scares Florida Pit Bull in Viral Video

Scared dog hiding under blankets

Hurricane Idalia rocked the Big Bend region of Florida with winds up to 125 miles per hour and devastating storm surge and flooding. Amidst the extreme weather event, a TikTok video was posted to the account @erniethepitbull. In the video, a pit bull named Ernie can be seen hiding under a blanket, appearing afraid of the storm. The video’s caption reads “Hurricane Idalia’s in the air! Poor Ernie is scared and does not want to go through another one!”

Noise aversion is common in dogs. Ernie’s reaction may have been due to fear of loud noises such as thunder or wind. Although it can be tempting to cuddle with a dog when they are fearful, or otherwise attempt to console them, experts warn that this could inadvertently reinforce the behavior. Instead, they recommend trying to use positive reinforcement techniques to help a dog such as Ernie.
