Photographer Gerrard Gethings has once again proven that people and their pets can share more than just a home—they can share strikingly similar looks. His playful photo book, Do You Look Like Your Dog? and Do You Look Like Your Cat?, pairs humans with their animal doppelgängers in a celebration of connection, humor, and the deep bonds between people and their furry companions.

Gethings searched across the UK for the perfect matches, photographing 50 human-and-animal duos for each series. Collaborating with hairstylist and makeup artist Sally Miura and wardrobe stylists Kate John and Vicente Ben, he created whimsical portraits that highlight shared features—from flowing locks and expressive eyes to distinct personalities that mirror one another.
These portraits do more than make people smile—they remind us of the empathy and shared energy that exist between humans and animals. Scientists have long noted that people often unconsciously choose pets that resemble themselves, not just physically but emotionally. Gethings’ work captures that uncanny reflection, suggesting that our relationships with the animal world may reveal as much about us as they do about them.
It’s also a gentle nod to how much we depend on other species for emotional health. Whether we’re caring for a rescue dog or a rescued heart, the comfort of companionship strengthens our connection to the earth and encourages kindness toward all living beings.
Gethings’ portraits are available as card games, prints, and books that invite people to look at themselves—and their pets—a little differently. Each pairing is both hilarious and heartwarming, showing that love, in all its forms, often has a matching face.
The photo series has been turned into memory games for kids, cats here and and dogs here!
