Last year, HB660 “Requiring the Labeling of Genetically Engineered Foods & Agricultural Commodities,” was introduced to the New Hampshire State legislature and assigned to a committee for review. After a year of intense review, several guest speakers, and many heated debates, it’s now time for the bill to go before the House.
As of right now, the bill will be voted on by the House of Representatives this month. If it is passed by the House, it will then go on to the Senate for review before their vote.
According to a report from Boston.com, “The House Environment and Agriculture Committee split in its recommendation on the bill with a majority favoring killing it. But a minority is arguing it’s time for states like New Hampshire to lead regardless of the federal position on the issue.”
One Representative, Peter Bixby, writes that the bill is about people’s right to information:“We simply feel that people should have the freedom to make their own choices about food, and since knowledge is essential to the proper exercise of that freedom, information about genetically engineered content should be available on food labels,” he said.
If you’re from N.H., you can call your representatives now and urge them to vote yes on the bill! C’mon, Green Monsters, let’s get it passed!
