Heartfelt Plea for Palliative Care Home for Dancer, a Resilient Husky Battling Cancer

Dancer, a spirited seven-year-old Husky, urgently needs a loving palliative care home after a routine spaying revealed she has cancer. Previously under the care of a breeder, Dancer is now at Many Tears Animal Rescue in South Wales, searching for a family to cherish her during what may be her limited remaining time.

In an Instagram video shared by Many Tears Animal Rescue (@manytearsrescue), Dancer radiates joy and vitality, showing no visible signs of her illness. A spokesperson for the rescue told Newsweek, “The beauty for Dancer, as of right now, is that she doesn’t know she is poorly. She will feel fine, act like a normal, playful Husky, and love you unconditionally until one day, in an unknown amount of time, it will catch up with her.”

Dancer was surrendered to the shelter last month. According to Lisa, a shelter worker, the volunteers immediately fell in love with her. “She is the sweetest soul, a dog’s ability to just ‘get on with it’ is truly remarkable and she has started her new life here as she means to go on, loving every second until the very end, but she desperately needs her first family,” Lisa shared.

Initially, Dancer’s health issues were unknown. It was only after her spaying that veterinarians discovered lumps and subsequent tests confirmed malignant carcinoma. VCA Animal Hospitals explains that malignant mammary tumors in dogs are primarily carcinomas originating from various cells within the mammary glands.

These tumors can vary significantly, from those that remain localized to aggressive ones that metastasize. Factors like hormonal exposure, particularly to progesterone, increase the risk of developing these cancers. Early spaying significantly reduces this risk. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and biopsy, with treatment options ranging from surgical removal to chemotherapy, depending on the cancer’s stage and type.

The video of Dancer captures her joyfully playing, soaking up affection, and enjoying walks, although one scene poignantly reveals the large scar across her stomach from her recent surgery. The caption describes her as “a laid-back girl who is quite relaxed and chilled, but she still has such a love for life and once out and about really relishes her adventures!”

The search for a home for Dancer is urgent and filled with compassion. The shelter hopes to find adopters who can provide a calm environment and closely monitor her health, particularly watching for any tumor regrowth or signs of coughing. The caption highlights that she is “still very much a Husky,” playful, outgoing, and mischievous, as the American Kennel Club (AKC) noted. It adds, “She loves chilling out and having a snooze, she is also very high energy when out and about and still loves to pull us along during her walks up our lanes. She also adores her toys, so she will insist on a steady supply of them!”
