Fossil-fuel companies are the “godfathers of climate chaos” and should be banned from advertising in every country, similar to restrictions on tobacco advertising, declared United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. In a stark warning delivered during a major speech in New York, Guterres highlighted the dire scientific warnings of escalating global heating.
Speaking at the American Museum of Natural History, Guterres urged news and tech media to cease enabling “planetary destruction” by accepting fossil-fuel advertising. He emphasized the urgent need for global action, stating, “We are playing Russian roulette with our planet. We need an exit ramp off the highway to climate hell.”
New data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) shows an 80% chance that the planet will breach the critical 1.5°C (2.7°F) warming threshold above pre-industrial levels at least once within the next five years. The past year has already surpassed this limit, with the average global temperature 1.63°C (2.9°F) higher than pre-industrial times, according to the European Union’s Copernicus monitoring system.
The 2015 Paris Agreement set a target to limit Global warming to 1.5°C to prevent catastrophic climate impacts. While a single year above this threshold does not signify failure, scientists predict that sustained exceedance is likely within the next decade. The WMO estimates a roughly 50-50 chance that the period from 2024 to 2028 will average above 1.5°C globally.
Guterres criticized fossil-fuel firms for their minimal investments in clean energy and for misleading the public about climate science. He called for governments to ban fossil-fuel advertising and urged public relations and media companies to sever ties with oil, gas, and coal interests. “Fossil fuels are not only poisoning our planet – they’re toxic for your brand,” he asserted.
Despite the grim outlook, Guterres expressed hope, praising the surge in clean-energy deployment and predicting that the economic logic will ultimately end the fossil-fuel era. However, he stressed the need for accelerated action from governments to phase out fossil fuels and Support vulnerable nations. The UN leader’s speech aimed to refocus global attention on the climate crisis amid ongoing geopolitical and economic challenges. Upcoming international meetings, including the G7 in Italy and the Cop29 climate summit in Azerbaijan, will be critical for countries to solidify their commitments to reducing emissions and achieving climate goals.
