French Photographer Sets Up a Mirror in the African Forest to Capture Animals Walking By. The Results are Stunning and Hilarious! (VIDEO)

We check ourselves out in the mirror nearly every day, but we are among the few animals in the world that recognize that the reflection is ours. “Self-recognition” as this is called actually requires a lot of complex cognitive coordination. For many years it was believed that humans were the only animals with this ability; however, we have since learned that dolphins, elephants, and chimpanzees can too. Other animals relate to the reflections in mirrors in different ways, dogs, for example, can recognize other dogs in a mirror, but they can’t tell that the dog staring at them is, well, them.

So, when a French photographer set up a mirror in the middle of the Gabon jungle, he knew he’d be in for some pretty interesting reactions from the forests’ many animals.
