The amount of trash we produce and use has risen over the past 30 years. 300 million tons of plastic is produced every year and sadly a staggering 85 percent is not recycled. This means the trash will be sent to landfills and then more than likely, will end up polluting our oceans. In fact, it’s estimated that around 8.8 million tons of plastic trash end up in the world’s oceans ever year. Tragically, it is estimated that around 700 marine species are faced with extinction thanks to the threat that plastic poses them in the form of entanglement, ingestion, and Pollution.
But plastic bags at Salt Lake City retail stores could soon become a thing of the past, thanks to one compassionate fifth grader!
After writing a school essay last year, Liam LaMalfa realized the huge problem plastic bags cause and wanted to do something about it. Liam started a petition asking for plastic bags to be banned from retail stores and so far more than 300 people have signed the petition. Instead of plastic bags, Liam is urging shoppers to use reusable bags instead. We applaud Liam’s efforts and his Mom is in full support too, “We are very proud of him that he feels motivated to do this and he feels that he can make a difference even at 10 years old.”
Liam will present his petition to Salt Lake City Council during their next meeting and there is hope for the ban. City Councilman Jason Rogers said the idea of a plastic bag ban is something they are taking very seriously and the ban could go into effect sometime in the near future.
Even if you don’t live in Salt Lake City, you can still make a difference. We have a choice to use disposable plastics on a daily basis or choose to use a reusable, sustainable alternative. Together, we can make a difference!
As the leading organization at the forefront of the conscious consumerism movement, One Green Planet believes that reducing everyday plastics from our lives is not about giving up anything or sacrificing convenience, but rather learning to reap the maximum benefit from the items you use every day while having the minimum impact.
