Even though the Asian elephant’s range extends across many countries, its population numbers are dropping dramatically. The Asian elephant’s range originally went from Iraq to Syria, but now they are only found from India to Vietnam, with small populations in China. Listed as endangered, the Asian elephant has only around 25,600 to 32,750 individuals left in the wild.
Given the extreme endangerment of these animals, it is extra lucky that a group of locals found this baby elephant before it was too late. The calf had fallen into a water storage pit in southwest China and was unable to get out. This group of amazing people worked together to help dig a path for the baby to get out. His herd was probably close by, waiting for his return.
The loss of even one individual can have a huge impact on an endangered species. We hope that this adorable little guy catches up with his herd and lives a long, healthy life. Thanks to these wonderful people, another elephant is alive and able to contribute to the success of his species.
