This video captures the amazing moment when two female great whales and their calves interacted with a group of awe-struck tourists off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. The two-minute drone footage, which was filmed by Mark Carwardine, proves once again that the only truly educational way to witness cetaceans is in their natural environment.
The tourists – who were on a boat trip in San Ignacio lagoon in February when the whales made their appearance – were also able to film their interactions with these incredible animals. According to the video narrator, one of the whale mothers “proved herself to be a gentle giant when she allowed herself to be petted … and even her calf couldn’t resist a scratch and a tickle.”
This incredible moment demonstrates just how amazing a human-marine animal encounter can be when we are willing to interact respectfully with them on their own terms.
