A 7-8 foot long dead great white shark washed ashore on a beach in Long Island, New York, is just the latest shark sighting this summer.

When police arrived on the scene, the shark had already washed back out to sea. Over the last three weeks, there have been at least five shark attacks near the Long Island coast alone.

“At this time we are cautioning swimmers and boaters in the area to be aware of this ongoing situation, and to keep distance to allow the Law Enforcement to monitor this event,” the Quogue Village Police Department said in a post on its Facebook page.

Police are working with the South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center in Bridgehampton to monitor the situation. The museum’s director, Frank Quevedo, told USA TODAY that the surge in sightings is likely due to Conservation efforts in the area. Legislation prohibiting the overfishing of menhaden or bunker fish has resulted in a resurgence of marine life.

“That includes sharks, whales, dolphins, ospreys, seals and bald eagles,” he said. “(Menhaden) is the most important fish in the Atlantic Ocean because it feeds everything.”

Because great white sharks are typically 11 to 16 feet long, experts believe that this shark was young. The cause of death of the shark is not known.

The police department asks the public to be cautious and, if a shark is spotted, to please call the Quogue Village Police Department at 631-653-4791.
