Martha Crawford’s Climate change dreams started about a decade ago, vivid and explicit, urging her to pay attention to the urgent environmental crisis. These dreams were not unique to her; they seemed to be a reflection of a growing concern that had embedded itself into the collective subconscious. In response to this phenomenon, Martha initiated the Climate Dreams Project in 2019, providing a platform for people to share their climate-related dreams, offering a glimpse into the “fabric of dreaming.”
A recent survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of TIME revealed that over a third of Americans have dreamt about climate change at least once in their lives. The imagery in these dreams varies, but common themes include extreme weather events and natural disasters. Interestingly, emotions associated with these dreams differ across generations. Millennials tend to experience more hopeful dreams, possibly due to their greater exposure to Climate change issues throughout their lives, while Gen Z and Boomers often have more negative dreams, mirroring their differing perspectives on the future impact of Climate change.
Climate change‘s prevalence in the zeitgeist has influenced the content of dreams. Dreams can be seen as a reflection of our emotional state, and it’s not surprising that people are dreaming more about Climate change as it becomes an ever-pressing reality. The pandemic, world wars, and other significant events have similarly impacted collective dreaming, serving as a barometer of societal concern.
The influence of demographic factors on climate dreams is also evident. Geography plays a role, with people living in regions heavily impacted by Climate change experiencing more climate-related dreams. People of color, who often bear the brunt of Climate change’s effects, also report more climate dreams than their white counterparts. Political affiliation and gender also play a role, with conservatives and men having more positive climate dreams than liberals and women.
Understanding these dreams can help individuals process their emotions related to the climate crisis. Dream interpretation can provide insights into one’s relationship with the environment and their sense of control over the situation. It can also shed light on the need for deeper connections to nature and like-minded individuals working towards environmental solutions.
Furthermore, some experts suggest that climate dreams might hold the seeds of innovative solutions to climate change. Dreams have historically inspired breakthroughs in various fields, and by encouraging people to dream up climate solutions, we might uncover valuable insights and ideas.
One dreamer from the Climate Dreams Project shared a vision of a sustainable future, where a group of nomads thrived in harmony with the environment, harnessing renewable energy and living in simple yet fulfilling ways. While this dream may be fictional, it exemplifies the hope and creativity that can be found in dreams, and how they can shape our outlook on the world.
