President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to lead the U.S. Department of Energy, Chris Wright, emphasized the importance of increasing domestic energy production during his Senate confirmation hearing on Wednesday. Wright highlighted liquefied natural gas (LNG) and nuclear power as pivotal to his strategy, which he views as critical for economic growth and global competitiveness.
At 60, Wright, the former CEO of Liberty Energy, has long argued that fossil fuels play a central role in reducing poverty worldwide. While acknowledging the need to address Climate change, he described its threat as “distant” compared to immediate global energy needs. “The solution to Climate change is to evolve our energy system,” Wright stated. He expressed Support for alternative energy sources like small nuclear reactors and geothermal power, while criticizing solar and wind as insufficient for current demands.
Protesters interrupted the hearing multiple times, drawing attention to wildfires in Los Angeles and their connection to Climate change. In response, Wright called the fires “heartbreaking” but reiterated his stance that wildfire concerns are often exaggerated to justify policies aimed at reducing fossil fuel use.
Wright plans to focus on removing barriers to energy development, including easing restrictions on LNG exports and drilling on federal lands. These efforts align with Trump’s broader agenda to expand energy production and lower energy costs for Americans. Wright also expressed optimism about collaborating with Doug Burgum, the nominee for interior secretary, on a new energy council.
