Going the extra step to help animals in need is something that all animal lovers do. When we see another living creature in distress, we feel obligated to lend a hand in any way we can. One kind animal lover, however, has gone to incredible lengths to help a dog who jumped into the frozen Betsie Bay in Michigan.
A team of Coast Guards witnessed a yellow Lab dive into the icy waters and immediately stepped in to help. The bay was covered with ice, so what would have otherwise been a simple rescue became incredibly challenging. Petty Officer 3rd Class Tim Putnam, put on full ice rescue gear and bravely dove into the frigid waters to help the dog who was struggling to stay afloat.
It took 20 minutes for Putnam to swim 200 feet out to the frightened pup. Once he had the dog, the two were towed back to the boat. Two more officers came to aid Putnam and get the dog to safety.

As soon as he was safely on land, the pup was dried off and the crew warmed him as best as they could. The dog was soon taken to the Animal Welfare League of Benzie County and it was determined that he had amazingly made it through this traumatic event unharmed, thanks to the fast action of the Coast Guard team!
The Lab was not wearing a collar, so it was a bit difficult to find his guardians, but the Animal Welfare League of Benzie County finally found the pup’s family and they were happily reunited. We certainly hope that after this scare, his family will be sure to keep this adventurous pup on a leash at all times!
A huge thank you to all the kind people who made this reunion possible!
