Billie Eilish, Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Robert DeNiro, and Megan Thee Stallion are among the hundreds of celebrity signatories of an open letter from artists, athletes, actors, and organizations supporting police reform legislation in California.
Other signatories include the Jonas Brothers, Anderson .Paak, Migos, Kehlani, and Mary J. Blige and actors Sarah Paulson, Zooey Deschanel, Cynthia Erivo, Josh Gad, and Sterling K. Brown. Companies and organizations like Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, the Screen Actors Guild, and the Actors’ Equity Association also signed the letter.
The letter, released Wednesday, urges California Governor Gavin Newsom, Speaker Anthony Rendon, Assembly Member Reggie Jones-Sawyer, and Assembly Member Ken Cooley to approve two bills addressing police accountability.
SB 731, the Kenneth Ross Jr. Police Decertification Act of 2020, was introduced by CA State Sen. Bradford and would establish a process to revoke a police officer’s certification following the conviction of certain serious crimes or termination of employment due to specified misconduct.
SB 776, introduced by CA State Sen. Skinner, would increase transparency in the police department by expanding access to all records involving police use of force and police dishonesty as well as disciplinary records involving officers who have engaged in discriminatory or racist behaviors and actions. The bill also allow fines for public agencies that fail to provide records and allow the public to seek punitive damages if they are forced to sue to obtain the records.
“While the killing of George Floyd inspired sustained outrage, protests, and reporting, the people of California have long understood the need to properly address the actions and accountability of police,” the letter reads. “For too long, courts have undermined the intent of the State’s laws, allowing bad police officers to violate the rights of those they are meant to protect. In addition, a lack of transparency and a deficient recordation system has shielded officers who abuse their authority and tarnish the integrity of California’s law enforcement. We can fix this.” Read the full letter on Rolling Stone.
