Orangutans are rapidly disappearing because of human actions; deforestation, the illegal wildlife pet trade, and poachers are wiping out the endangered species. In the past two decades, humans have destroyed around 80 percent of orangutan habitat, according to International Animal Rescue (IAR).

So, it is sad to see so many orangutans, like Pelangsi, injured, trapped, or worse, dead — because of us. In the above video, watch IAR’s rescue of Pelangsi, an 11-year-old orangutan who got caught in a snare.

The video is heartbreaking, as IAR staff arrive at the scene. Pelangsi’s right hand has been trapped for at least a week, maybe even 10 days. Thus, he has not eaten or drunk anything for that period of time.

The staff does an amazing job getting Pelangsi to the rescue center, rehabilitating him, and by the end of 2012, released him back into the wild.
