Oscar-winning filmmaker David S. Ward, best known for his work on “The Sting” and “Sleepless in Seattle,” is stepping back into the director’s chair for the first time since 1996 to lead a new biographical film titled Dr. Campbell. The film will chronicle the life of Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a pioneer in the field of plant-based nutrition, and explore his groundbreaking research on the links between diet and chronic diseases.

The story of Dr. Campbell will take viewers from Campbell’s childhood on a dairy farm in the 1930s through his career as a scientist. His research, which ultimately challenged long-held beliefs about the safety of an animal-based diet, faced resistance from powerful entities, including the government, corporate interests, and academia. Despite these challenges, Dr. Campbell became an influential figure in the movement toward plant-based nutrition, largely thanks to his bestselling book, The China Study.

According to the film’s official logline, “From an unlikely starting point, and later battling his own illness, scientist Dr. Colin T. Campbell discovers that an animal-based diet dramatically increases the risk of disease, which threatens government, corporate and academic groups more interested in power and profit than in truth and health.”

Ward, primarily known for his comedies and sports films like Major League and King Ralph, expressed his interest in the character of Dr. Campbell. He noted in a statement, “What attracted me as much as the importance of Doctor Campbell’s discoveries was the character of the man behind them. An eccentric optimist with an unfailing sense of humor and an iron will, he challenges every conventional idea about what makes a great research scientist. There’s really no one quite like him.”

The project is produced by Silent D Pictures and PlantPure Productions, with Nelson Campbell, John Corry, Djonny Chen, and Ajo Kacmar as producers. Nelson Campbell, Dr. Campbell’s son, has worked on several documentaries related to plant-based nutrition, while John Corry is known for producing health-centered films like Forks Over Knives. Silent D Pictures previously produced works such as the drama High Wire and the black comedy Influenced!, which starred “Harry Potter” actress Evanna Lynch.

Dr. Campbell is set to begin production in mid-2025, with a release targeted for 2026!
