Don’t wait until the start of a new year to make much needed changes in your life. New year’s resolutions are all fine and dandy, but some people get into the mindset that if they begin to falter shortly into their resolution that they have failed. That’s not true! Pick yourself back up and continue on. Or, instead of waiting to make those start of the year resolutions, you can start right now!
Simple is good, especially in a world where working 40 hour work weeks and running around doing constant errands are, unfortunately, the norm. We are only getting older, so there’s no better time than now to live a happier life. Are you ready? Get to it today with these simple things anyone can do to reach a higher level of happy.
1. Get More (Better) Sleep
Don’t be a zombie during the day, aim for seven to eight hours of quality sleep per night. When you get enough sleep, you will be able to function better, be more productive, your memory might improve, and you may feel more joy. Check out these tips to start getting that good night’s sleep you deserve or maybe you need a recharge with a power nap to help get you through the rest of your day.
2. Be Social and Stay in Touch
Being social does not mean you have to go clubbing or mingle for hours with strangers. It can be as easy as sending an email or text message to a friend you have not seen in a while to inviting pals or family over for a Sunday brunch. A key to happiness is having those positive social relationships with friends, family, and people you just meet, so surround yourself with good, positive people and feel your spirits lift.
Could meditation be the key to a happier you? Meditation can help lower stress levels, and it can be free to do! Meditation, when practiced regularly, helps to clear and focus the mind, calms nerves, and supports inner peace. Research shows meditation can lead to physical changes in the brain making you happier, even more compassionate, and raise self-awareness.
4. Get Active and Eat Well — Every Day!
There are different reasons why people are sedentary or eat poorly. A job may require you to sit most of the work day, maybe the kids have you exhausted, there are too many errands to run, or it could be that you’re just a bit of a couch potato. Physical activity stimulates the body and has been known to pull people out of depressive slumps. To boost happiness and personal well-being, eat the right foods and go on a walk first thing in the morning before your busy day starts. Take in that energy boosting morning sunlight!
5. Declutter Home Office or Workspace
Take a look around your home office or on-site workspace. Guaranteed, you have stuff you really don’t need that’s taking up space and causing mental chaos. Living minimally does not allow room for distracting junk that keeps you from being productive, so maybe you need to start being a minimalist. Check out this nifty guide to getting rid of things you’re hanging on to but don’t need to anymore!
It is essential to understand that it is not selfish to want to be happy. Just because those around you are not as happy does not mean you should feel guilty for doing the right things to help boost your happiness, and therefore your health. In fact, like a sincere smile, your positive feelings can be contagious, so emanate those happy vibes and watch as the people you encounter get hit with a dose of your happiness.
