Floride may be thought to do the teeth good but evidence has certainly stacked up against fluoride being a positive to the rest of our body. It’s linked to all sorts of ailments, such as bone cancer, thyroid disease, and brain damage. With the recent rise in consumer awareness, health conscious people are ditching fluoride quickly, and studies are proving it’s something we should all consider.
However, for many, this causes concern because we’ve grown up under the illusion that we have to have fluoride in order to have healthy teeth. But, at what cost are we doing this? Furthermore, is there a way in which we can get the benefits fluoride is touted as providing without endangering our lives in the process? Without a doubt, there are plenty of natural items to help maintain our oral hygiene and stay healthy at the same time.
Whether done at home with a few simple ingredients or store-bought, natural toothpaste is no big deal to get, and it gets rid of any issues we might have with commercial pastes, most of which flaunt their inclusion of fluoride. There are lots of opinions on homemade toothpastes out there, but to keep it in perspective, humankind survived many, many years without chemically produced, mass marketed, brand name toothpaste. We can — and probably should — learn to press on without them.
Cloves and Clove Oil
Cloves and clove oil are still common in the dentist office, particularly for pain relief from toothaches. Clove oil, or more so the eugenol found in it, numbs the area, as well as supplies anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects. This means that, aside from providing relief, it helps to remedy situations that might cause us to lose a tooth or worse. The simplest method for utilizing cloves in oral hygiene is to chew a clove (only one, it’s powerful) or to apply it directly to the troublesome area. A natural clove mouth wash is but four ingredients away.
Lots of people are singing the praises of coconut oil these days, and they are doing so for many reasons, which makes it little surprise that oral hygiene joins the benefits. The practice is called oil pulling, and it’s something that has been practiced within Ayurvedic cultures for centuries. The crux is swishing around about a teaspoon of oil in your mouth for as long as possible, with specific attention on pulling it through the cracks between teeth, before spitting it out (Don’t swallow it — yuk!). This helps to remove any kind of gunk or troublesome debris, and coconut oil works better than other oils because of its anti-bacterial characteristics.
Sunshine in Bulk
Most people associated calcium with healthy bones (and teeth), but vitamin D is crucial for absorbing that calcium and getting it where these places it needs to go. Additionally, vitamin D reduces gingivitis, gum disease being a huge cause of tooth decay, so it helps our teeth and generally oral health. In short, a little time — not sunbathing, but simply outside — in the sun can go a long way to keep our teeth healthy. Who knew? For those not into the outdoors or sunshine, taking a supplement might be worthwhile.
A Healthy, Whole Food, Grain-free Diet
It seems half of keeping our teeth healthy involves not damaging them in the first place. The ideas behind this are fairly simple. Candy, chewy or hard, is a big no-no, as the excessive amounts of sugar, especially the type that sticks to or coats our teeth for extended periods. Highly acidic (and sugary) things like soda, sports and energy drinks are also horrible. Healthy, whole foods, as usual, are the answer. Eat a good diet and your teeth should stay healthy. Broccoli, strawberries, carrots and shitake mushrooms are amongst the list of foods particularly good for teeth.
So, smile. Things are looking up. Things are getting better. The universe is telling us all we can keep our teeth without dousing them with or ingesting questionable chemicals. Mother Nature has been there for us all along.
