Conscious consumers already know the difficulties involved with identifying ethical produce during the weekly grocery shop, but one shopping area that gets neglected is clothing. Although the most sustainable option for clothing is to buy second hand, from local thrift stores for example, or to host clothes swaps, there are still times when you need to buy new clothes, and supporting ethical brands sends a positive message to ethical companies and brands that employ sweatshop labor. That’s why we have put together this guide; to enable you to vote with your wallet and make conscious, ethical choices about what you wear against your skin.

Sweatshop labor is a widely-known issue, as demonstrated by its ironic portrayal in the recent Simpsons/Banksy opening sequence, so we don’t think a detailed report on it is necessary here. However, because of its prevalence in the media, in some ways, people have become complacent about the issue of poor working conditions and employee rights, and just as corporate greenwash plagues the environmental industry, a type of ‘justicewash’ plagues the world of fair labor. Although a global fair-trade symbol exists and the requirements are regulated, many self-made certifications have cropped up over the years. One such example is Worldwide Responsible Apparel Production, (WRAP), which was established in the year 2000 as a co-creation of the American Apparel Manufacturers Association and several prominent clothing manufacturers. This close industry connection has been the subject of much skepticism, as it suggests industry bias, and WRAP has also been criticized for a lack of public transparency. On the other hand, there are a number of ethical companies that are transparent about their manufacturing methods and employees, which means that they don’t feel the need to pay for and display the fair trade symbol. These companies are just a few big names who desperately in need of pressure from you, the consumer.

Abercrombie and Fitch Abercrombie and Fitch clothing is manufactured at a factory in the Philippines where union members and officers have been placed on forced leave. Next time you’re near an Abercrombie and Fitch store, pop in and ask to speak with the manager about labor standards at the factories that produce A&F and Hollister clothing. Pressure from consumers may eventually encourage the company to be more transparent about its expectations for suppliers.
Adidas Adidas clothing has been traced back to sweatshop labor abroad. War on Want made a video about the issues with Adidas products. Email Adidas with your concerns by using this form.
Disney Chinese workers have had to sign one-sided ‘contracts’ where wages, work hours and benefits were left blank. Wages had been withheld, overtime unpaid, working hours excessive and living conditions in the dormitories atrocious.  There are also concerns surrounding the high numbers of suicides of Disney factory employees. Boycott Disney and email them your concerns using this form.
Gap Inc Gap is well known for its sweatshop and child labor practices, but the brand is still going strong. A report on the working conditions can be found here. Gap also owns the brands Banana Republic and Old Navy. Tell your friends about Gap’s dubious ethics and ask them to boycott the brand. Email Gap with your concerns using
Gymboree, Hanes, LL Bean Some companies have stopped sourcing Uzbek cotton due to the government’s abusive labor practices, but not Gymboree, Hanes,and LL Bean. Primark Primark have been exposed as employing people in sweatshop conditions in Bangladesh and even in the UK. War on Want has all the information here. Primark justicewash these issues by calling themselves ethical traders. Spread the word, boycott them, and email Primark to demand that they start treating their workers better, using this form.
Propper International Propper International produces uniforms for state police, local government agencies and thefederal government.  Its factories are in the Dominican Republic where employees work 12 hours or more a day without breaks, even to use the restroom, according to a recent report by SweatFree Communities.  Workers have reported extremeexhaustion in the stifling heat of the factory, and unhealthy working conditions due tothick fabric dust clogging the factory’s air. Contact CEO Tom Kellim at to remind him that workers have a right to organize a union to bargain for better wages, benefits and working conditions. Urge the company to improve working conditions and endorse employee rights in their factories.
Sevenly Sevenly is charity brand that states on their FAQ page that they use WRAP certified T-shirts from Next Level Apparel. Email Sevenly your concerns about this justicewash by contacting them using this form.
Wal-Mart ‘According to a National Labor Committee report, an estimated 200 children, some 11 years old or even younger, are sewing clothing for Hanes, Wal-Mart, J.C. Penney, and Puma at the Harvest Rich factory in Bangladesh… The children report being routinely slapped and beaten, sometimes falling down from exhaustion, forced to work 12 to 14 hours a day, even some all-night, 19-to-20-hour shifts, often seven days a week, for wages as low as 6 ½ cents an hour..’ Read more here, if you can stomach it. There’s a lot that you, the consumer, can help to do to push forward the fair-trade cause. You can form local community or college campaign groups, spread the word about sweatshop labor, raise awareness of ethical companies, boycott brands with poor records and ethics, and above all, choose to vote with your wallet. Buy fair trade, or as close as you can get to it, and you will be making an immensely positive difference in this world. We hope this guide helps you to do just that.
