Petition: Tell Trump to Stop Healthcare Discrimination Against LGBTQ People!

Healthcare is a human right. No one deserves to not get treated or screened for illnesses because of their gender identity, sexual orientation, or the way they present themselves. Unfortunately, this is an all too common experience for LGBTQ people in the United States.

In 1995, Tyra Hunter was on her way to work as a passenger in her friend’s car. They ended up in a bad car accident and paramedics arrived to treat them. The medics had to rip open Hunter’s Pants to treat her and upon doing so, realized that she was trans. They stopped treating her and instead began to laugh at her for a period of time, while the crowd begged medics to continue trying to save Hunter. Eventually, medics took Hunter to the hospital, where she suffered neglect and mistreatment until her death. If Hunter had received the care she deserved, she could still be alive today. This is one of many stories that demonstrate the discrimination that LGBTQ individuals have faced when in need of medical attention. According to this Care2 petition, “Approximately one out of every five LGBTQ individuals say they’ve personally experienced a medical provider refusing them care; more than one in four experienced medical-related harassment.”

Under Obama, it was illegal to deny healthcare services to LGBTQ individuals, however, the Trump administration has been working for the past year to strip the LGBTQ community of these protections. Without Obama-era protections, health professionals will be able to mistreat people that are part of the LGBTQ community without facing any repercussions. LGBTQ individuals can be denied life-saving care, which is extremely dangerous, especially considering the pandemic.

Sign this petition to demand that Trump stop trying to strip the LGBTQ community of their rights. Don’t let him follow through with this cruel decision that will result in the harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ individuals when they need medical attention.
