Shell Reverses Course on Advanced Recycling

pollution from industrial plant

Shell has quietly stepped back from its ambitious plans to expand the use of “advanced recycling,” a method hailed by oil and petrochemical industries as a solution to plastic pollution. Advanced recycling involves breaking down plastic polymers into tiny molecules for reuse in synthetic fuels or new plastics, primarily through methods like pyrolysis.

Since 2019, Shell has invested in pyrolysis technology, aiming to process 1 million tonnes of plastic waste annually by 2025. However, in its 2023 sustainability report, Shell conceded that this target was unfeasible due to market changes and operational challenges. The company cited slow technology development, regulatory uncertainties, and insufficient feedstock as key reasons for scaling back its ambitions.

Critics, including environmental advocates and researchers, have long voiced concerns about advanced recycling. They argue that it can potentially exacerbate Pollution and energy consumption compared to traditional recycling methods or virgin plastic production. Moreover, the operational difficulties in processing varied post-consumer plastics have highlighted significant practical hurdles.

Despite industry claims dating back to the 1970s touting pyrolysis as a revolutionary solution, many operational facilities struggle, with some shutting down entirely. Regulatory shifts further complicate matters, with mixed legislative Support across states and evolving federal policies impacting the viability of advanced recycling.

While Shell’s decision marks a notable shift in strategy, it continues to champion its role in the plastic industry, recently opening a substantial chemical complex and maintaining membership in industry advocacy groups promoting advanced recycling. Nevertheless, critics view Shell’s retraction as a recognition of the inherent challenges and limitations of chemical recycling.
