France, like many other parts of the world, is going through one of the worst droughts in history. Residents have been told to avoid non-essential water usage. However, golf courses, which are notoriously horrible for the environment, do not have to abide by this rule.

Environmental activists associated with the Extinction Rebellion targeted some golf courses near Toulouse, calling golf the “leisure industry of the most privileged.” Depending on the location of the golf course, an 18-hole course can use, on average, over 2 billion gallons of water every single day.

As heat waves spread throughout Europe, France is experiencing some of the worst they ever have. 100 villages in the country are short on drinking water. Fires are erupting throughout the country, and an unprecedented amount of carbon is being released into the atmosphere.

France’s water bans are a national law, but they are enforced by regional offices. So far, only one region in France has told golf courses that they can not water. Some places in the country do not even have enough drinking water for people.
