On May 18, 2021, the International Energy Agency (IEA) released a reportNet Zero by 2050: A Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector that calls for an end to new fossil fuel drilling and coal plant projects. In addition to ending the use of fossil fuels, the report also calls for the increased use of clean, renewable energy, as well as a focus on bringing CO2 reduction technology onto the market.

The report argues that even if countries are able to achieve their climate goals, which at this rate, are quite ambitious, it will not be enough to avoid climate catastrophe. We will not reach net-zero global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions by 2050 and the temperature will rise more than 1.5 °C – the increase that scientists say will “put millions more” people at risk of climate-change-related disasters. To counteract this possibility, the report outlines what would be required for us to get to net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050, outlining more than 400 milestones for the next few decades.  According to CNN, the five-year milestones include:

  • “Immediate stop to new gas and oil projects.
  • No new sales of fossil fuel boilers starting in 2025.
  • Electric vehicles make up more than 60% of car sales by 2030.
  • No sales of new internal combustion engine passenger cars by 2035.
  • The global electricity sector reaches net-zero emissions by 2040.
  • 70% of electricity generation from solar and wind by 2050.”

Fatih Birol, the IEA Executive Director, commented on the new report: The IEA’s pathway to this brighter future brings a historic surge in clean energy investment that creates millions of new jobs and lifts global economic growth. Moving the world onto that pathway requires strong and credible policy actions from governments, underpinned by much greater international cooperation.”

This ambitious plan is vital to saving the planet and fossil fuel companies need to listen to IEA. Sign this petition to stand with the IEA and demand that all major oil and gas companies switch to the production of sustainable, green energy now. Make sure that government leaders, including President Joe Biden, mandate this switch!
