As the world seeks sustainable alternatives to traditional packing materials, a novel origami-based paper packaging is making waves, promising a plastic-free future for shipping products. Developed in Finland by researchers at VTT—a technology firm owned by the Finnish government—this innovative approach utilizes the art of origami to enhance the structural strength of paper.
Jarmo Kouko, the leader of the research team, observed that origami had not been extensively applied in packaging. Inspired by its potential, Kouko and his colleagues, in collaboration with Aalto University and several Finnish paper companies, embarked on a mission to mechanize the origami folding process. Their efforts focused initially on the Miura fold, a design originally intended for space applications like folding solar panels for satellites.
The choice of the Miura fold transforms regular paperboard into a robust packaging material. “The compressive strength is quite good,” Kouko explains, noting that the folded structure creates a lightweight yet durable material that rivals the effectiveness of polystyrene foam. Despite the higher production costs compared to simpler solutions like bubble wrap, the unique benefits of origami packaging make it an appealing option for companies striving to reduce their environmental footprint.
This push towards sustainable materials is driven by the increasing consumer and regulatory demands to move away from plastics, predominantly produced from fossil fuels, and the growing concern over plastic waste. Additionally, governments are starting to clamp down on non-recyclable packaging materials, such as the recent ban on packing peanuts by the state of Washington.
The visually appealing design of the origami packaging also makes it suitable for premium products, including certain cosmetics. Although the specific details of the machinery remain under wraps to protect intellectual property, the process involves automating the origami folds on large rolls of thick paper, significantly speeding up production times.
The project is set to conclude in early 2026, after which the involved paper companies will have the opportunity to commercialize the technology. According to Stora Enso, one of the project’s partners, origami packaging could hit the market within the next three to five years, offering a sustainable and efficient solution that aligns with global environmental goals.
