In a decisive move towards sustainability, Google has announced it will eliminate plastic from its consumer electronics packaging, achieving this goal six months ahead of its 2025 deadline. The tech giant initially made this commitment back in October 2020, and its efforts are now bearing fruit.

In a push to broaden the impact of its initiative, Google will release a comprehensive 70-page guide in June. This resource is designed to showcase the methodologies and innovations that facilitated their shift away from plastic, as explained by David Bourne, Google’s lead sustainability strategist, at the recent Circularity 24 event hosted by GreenBiz.

This guide emerges from Google’s experiences in redesigning the packaging for its heaviest consumer products, including collaborations with manufacturing partners for items such as televisions, which Google does not produce independently. The guide will cover various aspects from material selection to disposal, ensuring compatibility with existing recycling systems.

The inaugural product featuring the new packaging was Google’s Pixel 8 smartphone, launched in October. The packaging is primarily made from paper and fiber, focusing on recyclability and reducing environmental impact. The design overhaul extended to lamination, coatings, box assembly, and even the labeling process, addressing sustainability from multiple angles.

Google’s packaging revamp faced numerous challenges, including maintaining the durability and aesthetics of the packaging while removing plastic components like shrinkwrap. Other considerations involved adjusting package sizes and shapes to handle impacts better and selecting eco-friendly coatings and inks that align with Google’s branding needs.

Despite the higher initial costs associated with paper-based packaging, Google views this as a strategic investment that enhances the consumer experience and promotes long-term sustainability. The company is encouraging feedback from users and industry peers, emphasizing collaboration over competition in its sustainability efforts.

By sharing its innovations and encouraging a sector-wide shift towards sustainable practices, Google is setting a precedent that it hopes other companies will follow to create a more sustainable future for all.
