In the wake of escalating concerns over the deteriorating condition of global soil health, the Save Soil movement has embarked on a new initiative called ‘Soil For Climate Action’. This campaign seeks to express the pivotal role that healthy soil plays in combating climate change, emphasizing its capacity to sequester carbon and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

Healthy soil, when properly managed, acts as a reservoir for carbon, effectively trapping and storing significant amounts of it. Beyond its climate-mitigating capabilities, soil serves as a cornerstone for various ecological functions, including water filtration, agricultural sustenance, and the preservation of biodiversity.

Partnering with prominent organizations such as Climate Clock, 4per1000, Ecosystem Restoration Communities, SHE Changes Climate, and The Climate App, the Save Soil movement aims to amplify awareness about the urgency of soil Conservation. This collaboration was spotlighted at COP28, where the movement hosted enlightening discussions and events within its own pavilion in the UN-accredited Blue Zone.

Central to the ‘Soil For Climate Action’ campaign is a compelling photo series showcasing individuals and farmers implementing regenerative soil practices across continents. These evocative images serve as a visual testament to the tangible impact of sustainable soil management. The campaign’s message will spread across social media platforms under the hashtag #SoilForClimateAction, uniting Save Soil’s global network of volunteers and supporters.

Praveena Sridhar, Chief Technical Officer for Save Soil, underscored the significance of soil stewardship in the battle against Climate change, affirming, “Soil is not just a resource; it’s a powerful ally in our fight against Climate change. By acknowledging and addressing the global soil crisis, we can catalyze meaningful action and foster a future where healthy soils Support biodiversity, food security, and a stable climate. We made this case in the strongest possible terms at COP28.”

Echoing these sentiments, Dr. Muralee Thummarukudy, Director of the G20 Global Land Initiative Coordination Office of the UNCCD, emphasized the critical role of land and soil in climate mitigation efforts. He stressed the need for concerted global attention to leverage soil’s potential in carbon sequestration, Pollution reduction, and biodiversity restoration.

The Save Soil movement, propelled by the endorsement of organizations like the UNCCD, UNEP, UNFAO, World Food Program, and IUCN, remains steadfast in its mission to champion soil Conservation. Founded by Sadhguru, the movement advocates for policies that prioritize soil health, striving to maintain a minimum of 3-6% Soil Organic Matter across agricultural lands, tailored to regional conditions.
