The MIT School of Science is unveiling a new center dedicated to advancing sustainability science and supporting decision-makers across various sectors. The MIT Center for Sustainability Science and Strategy aims to deepen our understanding of complex sustainability challenges and offer actionable insights to improve human well-being for both present and future generations.
Noelle Selin, a professor at MIT’s Institute for Data, Systems and Society, and the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, will lead the center as its inaugural faculty director. Joining her will be C. Adam Schlosser and Sergey Paltsev as deputy directors, and Anne Slinn as executive director.
This new center builds on the work of the Center for Global Change Science and the Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change, enhancing its capabilities to address environmental and socio-economic systems. The center’s mission includes advancing knowledge of interconnected systems, developing innovative computational tools, and producing science that promotes equity and justice.
“As critical challenges such as climate, health, energy, and food security increasingly affect people’s lives around the world, decision-makers need a better understanding of the earth in its full complexity — and that includes people, technologies, and institutions as well as environmental processes,” says Selin. The center’s efforts will focus on integrating multi-system models, advancing data analysis, and fostering broad stakeholder engagement to Support sustainable development.
By leveraging MIT’s expertise in integrated systems modeling and cutting-edge computing technologies, the center aims to lead global efforts in sustainability science and strategy. This initiative reflects MIT’s commitment to addressing pressing global issues and developing solutions that benefit both current and future generations.
