The Bezos Earth Fund, launched by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has committed an impressive $10 billion towards combating climate change and enhancing biodiversity. However, the rapid deployment of these funds and the significant influence the organization has garnered in environmental circles is sparking unease among experts and researchers.

Since its inception in 2020, the fund has distributed over $2 billion across 230 grants. These funds have supported a range of projects, from artificial intelligence environmental solutions to clean energy advancements for underserved communities. Notably, the Bezos Earth Fund has become a pivotal figure in environmental and climate discussions, with key figures from various sectors involved in its operations, including former UK environment minister Zac Goldsmith and African environmentalist Wanjira Mathai.
Despite the substantial contributions, concerns are emerging about the fund’s growing control over crucial climate and biodiversity institutions. Critics argue that this influence may compromise the independence needed to effectively combat Climate change and biodiversity loss. Some stakeholders have expressed fears privately, concerned about potential repercussions on their own funding streams.
Holger Hoffmann-Riem from the Swiss NGO Go for Impact highlighted the potential conflict of interest, pointing out that while the financial Support is significant, the integrity of environmental action must remain free from substantial donor influence.
Adding to the controversy, a recent decision by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to potentially allow carbon offsets in corporate climate commitments after receiving an $18 million grant from the fund in 2021, has led to accusations of influence and greenwashing. This move has led to internal disputes within the SBTi, with calls for leadership changes and criticisms of the decision process.
Despite these allegations, the Bezos Earth Fund maintains that its involvement is philanthropic, and aimed at fostering effective and independent environmental governance. As the debate continues, the environmental community watches closely, hoping that the fund’s influence remains a positive force without overshadowing the essential autonomy of climate initiatives.
