EPA building

As Donald Trump is about to return to the White House, current and former staff at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) express growing anxiety over possible extensive cutbacks and policy reversals that could undermine years of progress in environmental protection. During Trump’s previous tenure, the EPA experienced significant shifts, with over 100 environmental regulations dismantled. This historical context has left EPA employees bracing for what could be an unprecedented upheaval in the agency’s approach to safeguarding air and water quality across the nation.

Nicole Cantello, an EPA water specialist and union president, highlighted the tense atmosphere among the staff, with many considering departure to avoid the expected intensification of political interference. The administration’s apparent agenda includes using Schedule F to replace experienced civil servants with political appointees and centralizing operations by relocating regional offices.

Trump’s allies have openly discussed strategies to cripple the EPA’s operational capacity by severely cutting funding, particularly targeting regulations that affect the energy industry. These proposed measures aim to diminish the EPA’s ability to enforce Pollution controls and chemical safety, posing significant threats to environmental and public health protections.

Under Joe Biden’s administration, the EPA saw an increase in staff and an expanded enforcement of Pollution laws, including new regulations aimed at reducing emissions from vehicles and power plants. However, these advances are now at risk if Trump implements the proposed changes outlined in Project 2025, a conservative manifesto calling for the elimination of key EPA offices and the rollback of regulatory powers.

EPA staff, past and present, foresee a challenging period ahead where the agency’s ability to manage chemical safety and Pollution enforcement could be drastically reduced. This potential pivot away from science-based policies towards politically driven agendas raises concerns about the future effectiveness of the EPA in fulfilling its core mission of protecting environmental health and safety. As the political landscape evolves, the EPA’s trajectory remains uncertain, with significant implications for national and global environmental policy.
