Donald Trump made a surprise appearance at a dog rescue fundraiser held at his resort, Mar-a-Lago. The former president spoke at the fundraiser for Big Dog Rescue Ranch on March 12 in Palm Beach, according to Fox 13 news.

Video from the fundraiser shows the crowd cheering as Trump takes the stage. He spoke off the cuff and shared that he wasn’t planning to speak, but heard yelling and decided to show up.

“What you’re doing is so important and so great and so important and I’m with you 100 percent,” he told the crowd. “We had many meetings in the White House and the Oval Office having to do with saving and helping dogs.” He also mentioned his daughter-in-law Lara Trump, a known animal lover.

Big Dog Rescue Ranch President Lauree Simmons shared that after the event, the group received obscene phone calls and had one donor pull their money after appearing at the former President’s home, according to NBC Miami.

“I’m just shocked somebody could stoop so low to do harm to a rescue that did so much work,” Lauree Simmons said in the NBC Miami article. “They give us amazing discounted rates, they provide a beautiful venue for us and have gone out of their way to help us raise money. To cancel our event there, that would be political.”
