According to a recent survey
Christine Özden, the global director for climate education at Cambridge, emphasized that tackling the climate crisis requires more than just geography lessons. She advocates for a comprehensive climate curriculum that empowers students at all educational stages with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in emerging green industries and respond effectively to environmental challenges.
The findings follow record-breaking global temperatures and coincide with the introduction of new environmental content into the school curriculum, including a GCSE in Natural History set to launch in 2025. These steps underscore a shifting educational paradigm that seeks to integrate climate education across multiple disciplines, including humanities and languages.
The urgency of incorporating climate education is echoed by Mike Berners-Lee, a professor at Lancaster University’s Environment Centre, who argues that the climate and ecological crises should be addressed across all parts of the curriculum. He highlights the importance of not only understanding the factual aspects of climate change but also exploring its broader implications on society.
With more than 70% of the British public in favor of prioritizing Climate change education, the next UK government faces significant pressure to review and revamp the current educational strategies to meet the challenges of a changing world.
