A city in Northern California is taking additional steps to help curb climate change. Petaluma, a city about 40 miles north of San Francisco, will now prohibit the “creation, expansion, reconstruction and relocation of gas stations,” according to CBS News.
The city council voted unanimously on the decision to help encourage electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

“We need to do our part to help mitigate and adapt to our changing weather patterns that exist because of all the carbon we put in the atmosphere,” Councilwoman D’Lynda Fischer, who ran the initiative, shared, “I hope other cities will follow suit, and if they have existing fossil fuel stations that satisfy the needs of their community, they too will decide that they don’t need any more.”
The city of 58,000 has 16 gas stations right now. California has long been leading the way in cutting carbon emissions. Governor Jerry Brown signed an executive order in 2018 to make the state carbon neutral by 2045.
