On June 4, Kevin Vesterberg was charged with 10 counts of animal cruelty for neglecting at least 60 animals on his Kansas farm, according to the Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS). The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office began investigating the farm after CAPS informed them of the neglect case on May 24th. Authorities were shocked by what they saw.
Animals on the Kansas farm were found suffering in the heat, surrounded by the dead and decomposing bodies of other animals. The animals who were still alive were emaciated, dehydrated, starving, and afflicted with a multitude of painful conditions. Witnesses described seeing animals with oozing eyes, long hooves, and even a bloody prolapse. Debbie Miller, the Kansas Director of CAPS, described it as “one of the worst cruelty cases” they had ever witnessed.
While the sheriff has been checking on the animals nearly every day, the animals have not been able to get veterinary care as the sheriff’s department doesn’t intend to seize the animals. However, CAPS is in the process of petitioning to gain access to the animals so that they can not only receive care, but also be transferred to animal sanctuaries.
