Petition: Protect Elephants No Longer “Working” During Pandemic

working elephants

The coronavirus pandemic, while seriously affecting people, has on the bright side led to some victories for nature and animals. Pollution has gone down and animals have been seen roaming freely. Sea turtles can peacefully lay millions of eggs, cruel bullfighting events have been canceled, and so much more. In good news for abused and exploited working elephants, the tourism industry in Thailand had to temporarily “retire” elephants because there are no tourists for them to cater to.

To no longer be exploited or abused should be good news, but there is growing concern for these elephants. While profiting from the captivity of an animal is an ethical issue, the money did also pay for the elephants’ food, which can be quite expensive. The elephants’ shelter was also paid for in this way.

What will happen to these elephants if there is no money to care for them? Sadly, these are domesticated elephants and it’s not clear if they’d be able to live in the wild. Animal welfare advocates are concerned that elephants can be used in worse ways for profits such as logging or begging in the streets. Or worse, they could be neglected and starve to death. They need protection.
