There is simply no way to ethically produce foie gras. The process is grotesque from start to finish. Male ducks and geese are trapped in tiny, unsanitary cages, meaning that their coats tend to end up matted in feces because they have no space to groom. Female ducklings, on the other hand, are tossed into a grinder and instantly ripped apart to their death, since their bodies cannot be used to make what humans have disgustingly deemed a “delicacy.” According to PETA, birds on foie gras farms can’t engage in natural behaviors, like flapping their wings, preening themselves, or swimming. This force-feeding causes the birds’ livers to become diseased and swell up to 10 times their normal size.

2. Demand That Elon Musk’s Company Stop Torturing Monkeys

Elon Musk’s recent research into “brain chip” technology involved mutilating the brains of monkeys and causing extreme suffering. More than a dozen of these innocent animals died because of Musk’s experiments at the University of California, Davis from 2017 to 2020. While Neuralink, Musk’s brain chip company responsible, is denying the claims and asserting that they acted in line with ethical principles for research, others are claiming otherwise. Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) claimed the research caused “extreme suffering” in their report to the USDA. The complaint describes animals showing clear signs of psychological trauma and illness from the experiments. Some monkeys even experienced vomiting, anxious behaviors, hair loss, and loss of appetite.

3. Make Sure This Zoo Never Kills Another Elephant Again

Japanese media has just released disturbing footage of the final hours of Hiroko the solitary captive elephant’s life before she collapsed and died in 2018. The disturbing video reveals the exact circumstances of her death, which at the time her zoo claimed was a peaceful one. However, this was far from the truth. A veteran elephant expert told Care2 that Hiroko’s situation was probably the worst he’s ever witnessed, explaining that she had a debilitating foot disease that led to her collapse and ultimate death. Hiroko’s many years of cruel and unnecessary suffering are all due to this zoo’s neglect of basic duties. Elephants are extremely intelligent animals and have complex social needs to maintain their psychological welfare, says Wild Welfare. It’s heartbreaking to imagine the many years of foot pain Hiroko had to endure, not able to voice her pain. She should have been examined, treated, and even humanely euthanized before it got to this point.

4. Tell Petco And PetSmart To Only Sell Guinea Pigs In Pairs!

Many pet owners are unaware of guinea pigs’ companionship needs. It’s common for people who don’t know better to raise guinea pigs alone – unintentionally leaving these adorable small creatures to suffer and ache from loneliness. A pair of pigs will play, chase, and eat together providing round-the-clock companionship when they are not with you. A single pig can become very lonely, and this stress could impact their health, says Humane Society Silicon Valley. When guinea pigs are unlucky enough to lose a partner or companion, they immediately begin to suffer and quickly need to have a new playmate found for them. This is true for the animals at every stage and age of their lives. Guinea pigs are extremely social animals and communicate through vocalizations and touch. These herd animals rely on companionship to thrive and live happy lives. This is why Switzerland has made it illegal to own just one guinea pig, without others of their kin to play and connect with.

5. Demand That Vogue Magazine Stop Promoting Fur In Their Magazines!

Recently, Elle Magazine decided they wanted to be on the right side of history. The company announced that from here on out, all of their magazines – including 45 global editions — would be “fur-free!” But other fashion magazines have been hesitant to take the same stance, leaving fur on their covers, editorials, and advertisements – and blood on their hands. Animals raised and killed for their skin and fur live torturous lives for “fashion.” Bred and born mainly on fur farms, creatures such as mink, foxes, chinchillas, and many many more species wallow in misery. They are packed into tight, restrictive, filthy cages. They are deprived of proper care and behavioral outlets – so long as their fur remains in good condition, there is no incentive for farmers to keep them healthy and happy when they are just going to be killed anyway

The dog nicknamed Ru, was found in the middle of the harsh Chicago winter. Not only was she starved to half her normal body weight, but she was having difficulties standing up, and was even wrapped in a urine-soaked blanket. She fought hard to survive, going back and forth between her loving foster home and the emergency vet due to countless complications resulting from the horrific abuse and neglect she endured. While Ru is an especially horrific case and involves abuse, she is just one of the thousands of dogs, cats, and other pets that will be abandoned, harmed or surrendered in Chicago this year. Many people took in pets during the pandemic, for a little comfort, but ended up having a change-of-heart when the world opened up again.

7. Demand That Abortion Be Written Into U.S. Law!

It’s the year 2022. A person’s bodily autonomy is somehow still up for debate. This is the United States, which is supposed to be the “land of the free.” Despite this, Republican state legislatures have been waging an outright attack on abortion access and pregnant people’s rights to make decisions for themselves about their bodies. Pregnancy is a choice, a monumental and deeply personal one. In the eyes of the law, choosing to terminate a pregnancy must be a purely medical decision that all people have the right to make for themselves. The Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) of 2021 would be the first piece of legislation – not just a court ruling – that would establish a nationwide right to abortion. And it’s already passed in the House of Representatives. All we need is for the Senate to vote “yes” on this law, and the frenzy of attacks on abortion access would be rendered powerless.

8. Tell Putin That His Campaign Of Bombing People In Hospitals Must End Now!

On March 9, Russian airstrikes hit and destroyed a maternity hospital in the port city of Mariupol. Videos show windows blown out, medical equipment damaged and obliterated, twisted metal littering hallways, and patients in agony. So far, we know that the strike injured 17 individuals — and killed three. Soldiers helped to evacuate the victims, from children were trapped beneath the rubble of shattered building pieces, to carrying out a wounded pregnant woman on a stretcher, who was holding her lower belly and covered in splattered blood, says npr. This devastating attack endangered the most vulnerable and threatened the existence of the healthcare system itself. No matter what Russian President Vladimir Putin’s agenda is, there can be no place for bombing children, pregnant women, and hospitals. He must order a return to humanitarian protection for all hospital facilities!

9. Protect The Beloved, Curious Axolotl From Extinction

Found only in Mexico City, these fascinating creatures called Axolotl are facing increasing threats from habitat loss and degradation. In fact, in 2006 the species was declared critically endangered. In 2009, experts estimated that the axolotl population had fallen 90 percent in the past four years, prompted by urbanization, says the Smithsonian. These amphibians are only found in Lake Xochimilco, but Lake Xochimilco is suffering from eutrophication; it is so rich in nutrients from agricultural runoff that the booming plant life kills the endemic species by depriving them of oxygen, says the Smithsonian. Like so many other species, the axolotl is threatened by habitat loss, Climate change, and other human-induced impacts. They should not have to suffer as a result of our horrific treatment of the natural world. These fascinating creatures are also one of the most important animals we have for studying regeneration.

10. Texas must prove it cares about children by standing up for trans kids, too.

Texas’s hate-filled governor Greg Abbott is at it again. This time, his target is trans children… and their parents. His latest plan to hurt trans youth is by directing both “licensed professionals” and “members of the general public” to report trans’ kid’s parents for child abuse, if those parents are supportive of their child’s right to happiness, self-determination, and self-expression. Specifically, he wants residents to report parents if they suspect children are receiving gender-affirming healthcare. According to him, Texas state agencies are supposed to investigate gender-affirming care as child abuse as well.
