The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has long mistreated and killed wild horses and burros in the United States. Sadly, they only plan to continue to do so with their newest plan. According to Animal Wellness Action, the BLM cut a backroom deal “with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Humane Society Legislative Fund, ASPCA, American Mustang Foundation, Return to Freedom, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and other western ranching interests.”
The deal involves the removal of 20,000-30,000 wild horses and burros from federal lands via cruel mass roundups as well as the painful mass sterilization of wild mares.
Months ago, Wild Horse Education and In Defense of Animals (IDA) released a video exposing the brutal mass roundups. These tragic events are absolutely terrifying and horrifying for the animals. Foals are separated from their mothers and many horses suffer injuries.
The sterilization procedure that wild mares are forced to endure is best explained by Grace Kuhn of the American Wild Horse Campaign: “Removal of the ovaries will cause pregnancy loss in the early to mid-stages, and the trauma of capture, confinement in a hydraulic squeeze chute, and the painful procedure itself will threaten pregnancy at all stages. In addition, pregnant mares are at a higher risk of hemorrhage when the ovaries are severed and removed. In domestic mares, the proposed procedure is not common, but when performed, requires a post-surgical seven-day stall confinement, during which the first 48 hours are spent in cross-ties to prevent the mare from lying down. Careful postoperative monitoring, antibiotics and pain relief are also necessary.”
Animal Wellness action agrees that the PZP vaccine would be a more humane alternative and yet it isn’t part of the plan outlined by the BLM.
Marty Irby, executive director at Animal Wellness Action describes what the BLM plans to do as “a plan to depopulate wild horses and burros setting up a longer-term play to allow their mass slaughter. These animal lobbying groups have sentenced our mustangs to a lengthy round of hellish treatment, and Congress should not waste one more taxpayer dollar on this scheme.”
What You Can Do
