58 Cows Found Dead During a Farm Visit in “the Worst Case of Animal Neglect” Ever Seen

Two brothers in Wales have been jailed in relation to a case council officers called “the worst case of animal neglect,” ever seen. Health officials found 58 dead cows during a visit to a farm near Llandsyul in Ceredigion in 2018.

David Davies, 61, and Evan Meirion Davies, 50, of Penffynnon Farm in Bangor Teifi, pled guilty to 13 separate charges. They were jailed after refusing to follow an order that banned them from keeping animals.

Gareth Lloyd, cabinet member for finance and public protection at Ceredigion Council said of the charges, “Both brothers have persistently disregarded a court order banning them from keeping animals. This order was originally imposed by the court, because of their extreme neglect of their animals, which resulted in the slow and unnecessary deaths of 58 cattle on their farm. The scenes witnessed by council staff, vets, police officers and contractors at the time were horrific. The council would have much preferred the brothers obeyed the order, but their utter refusal to comply has cost them their liberty and the ownership of the remaining livestock. This has been an extraordinary and exceptional case and is completely at odds with the high standards of care provided by the overwhelming majority of Ceredigion farmers to their animals.”

The brothers each received 24-week prison sentences. They are also required to reimburse the court for its expenses.
