The Global Anti-Dog Meat Coalition applauds the recent cultural events in Yulin, highlighting a promising shift away from the controversial Yulin Lychee and Dog Meat Festival. On June 20, Yulin hosted a high-profile fashion show, followed by a lion dance competition on June 21, showcasing traditional Chinese culture to the world. These events, promoted by the Yulin Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, TV, and Tourism, signify a potential move toward more positive cultural expressions.
Fleur Dawes of the Global Anti-Dog Meat Coalition expressed optimism about these developments, noting that government Support for such events indicates progress driven by local and international advocacy efforts. She said, “It’s fantastic that Yulin is shifting its focus toward positive cultural celebrations and away from cat and dog meat. Government Support for the fashion show and lion dance contest is an encouraging sign that local and international advocacy is making a difference. We Support and encourage Yulin and Chinese authorities to speed their transition towards a future without the criminal dog and cat meat trade.”
The Duo Duo Project has reported fewer new dog meat stands and the disappearance of older ones, attributing these changes to the progressive stance of Yulin’s new Party Secretary, Wang Shen. This is a significant development considering the festival’s history of extreme animal cruelty and the global condemnation it has faced.
Efforts to rescue dogs and cats from the meat trade continue, although rising costs and new government restrictions present challenges. Organizations like Suki Land Rescue, which cares for over 100 survivors, face financial difficulties in providing necessary care for these animals. Donations and public Support are crucial to maintaining these rescue operations.
Despite the grim reality of China’s cat and dog meat trade, there is hope. The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture’s de-listing of dogs for commercial purposes and city-wide bans in places like Shenzhen and Zhuhai reflect a growing opposition to the practice. The Global Anti-Dog Meat Coalition remains hopeful that China will implement a national ban, following the example set by South Korea in January 2024.
