SeaQuest, a chain of indoor petting zoos located in shopping malls across the United States, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The filing follows years of scrutiny over alleged animal mistreatment and unsafe conditions for visitors and employees. The parent company, SeaQuest Holdings, LLC, based in Idaho, reported liabilities exceeding $10 million, with assets totaling less than $1 million.
At its Las Vegas location in the Boulevard Mall, SeaQuest owes over $545,000 in unpaid rent. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) uncovered serious concerns during a recent investigation, including reports of animal neglect, unsanitary environments, and injuries to both visitors and staff. Laura Hagen, HSUS’s director of captive wildlife, stated that “countless animals have died and been harmed by SeaQuest business practices,” highlighting the company’s long-standing issues with animal welfare.
Public records further revealed instances of animals showing signs of stress and inadequate care. A video obtained by Clark County Animal Protection Services showed a banded armadillo running in circles, which experts attribute to severe distress. Inspections also documented koi fish with bulging stomachs and stingrays with wounds, among other troubling findings.
Animal rights organizations like PETA have long campaigned against SeaQuest. PETA’s Rebecca Smudzinski emphasized that the bankruptcy underscores the financial unsustainability of exploiting animals for profit. “This bankruptcy must not be a lifeline to keep this cruel and incompetent chain afloat,” she said, urging SeaQuest to shut down and rehome the animals in responsible facilities.
Despite these challenges, SeaQuest has indicated no immediate plans to close its doors, with its exotic animal permit set to expire in April. However, its financial struggles and history of controversies leave the company’s future uncertain.
