SeaQuest CEO Steps Down Amid Mounting Controversy

Vince Covino, CEO of the interactive aquarium chain SeaQuest, has announced his resignation, six months after an ABC News investigation revealed serious allegations of animal neglect and human injury at multiple locations. In a three-minute video message to employees, Covino expressed his deep connection to the company and hinted at a new role elsewhere, though he did not provide specifics.

The announcement has been met with cautious optimism from animal welfare advocates. Laura Hagen, director of captive wildlife for the Humane Society of the United States, welcomed Covino’s departure but stressed that more needs to be done to address the alleged mistreatment of animals at SeaQuest’s facilities. Hagen criticized the company for denying animals basic needs, such as proper nutrition and medical care, and allowing potentially harmful public interactions with the animals.

SeaQuest has faced increasing scrutiny, particularly after a 32-page notice of violation was issued by the New Jersey Department of Environment Protection against its Woodbridge Center Mall location. The notice detailed multiple instances of animals escaping, lack of medical care, and unauthorized public interactions. Despite these issues, SeaQuest maintains that the health and safety of their animals are top priorities.

Former employees have painted a troubling picture of the working conditions at SeaQuest. Some have alleged that their concerns about animal welfare were dismissed by management, leading to a hostile work environment. Several former staff members have come forward with claims of animal neglect, including cases where animals appeared injured or malnourished.
