The elusive fugitive Meeko, a male raccoon on the run, has kept the city of Sunderland, UK, on its toes as the search for his capture enters its seventh week. The saga began when a trespasser released three raccoons from an enclosure at Sunderland Training and Education Farm on December 18th. While two of the raccoons, Rocket and Pinch, were successfully lured back with hotdogs, Meeko remains at large, tempting volunteers and experts alike with his cunning evasion tactics.
Iain Jenkins, the founder of Raccoon Rescue UK, has been leading the charge in coordinating efforts to locate Meeko. According to Jenkins, Meeko is likely holed up in nearby woods, showcasing the remarkable intelligence of raccoons. Comparing them to young children in terms of intelligence, Jenkins emphasized their ability to outmaneuver attempts at capture, making the task all the more challenging.
Emily Colburn, who works at the farm, described Meeko as “more of a nightmare” compared to the two females, citing his adeptness at hiding. Despite paw-print evidence indicating his periodic returns to the farm for food, Meeko has mastered the art of vanishing back into his chosen hideout, frustrating search efforts.
Raccoons, native to North America, have demonstrated remarkable adaptability to urban environments, as seen in cities like Toronto, where authorities offer guidance on deterring and managing raccoon populations. Jenkins revealed the challenges posed by raccoons’ ability to outsmart traditional trapping methods, necessitating swift and strategic action to capture them.
