A paper by Environmental Working Group (EWG) scientists has introduced a novel concept that humans can serve as a critical resource in understanding the far-reaching effects of “forever chemicals” known as PFAS on various animal species. PFAS Pollution, a pervasive global issue, poses a substantial threat not only to humans but also to wildlife, particularly those already endangered or at risk due to other environmental challenges.
PFAS, or per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, are a group of synthetic chemicals that have gained notoriety for their persistence in the environment and their adverse health effects. These chemicals have been linked to immune system impairment, disruptions in reproductive and fetal development, hormone disruption, an increased risk of cancer, and numerous other health concerns in both humans and laboratory animals. Now, the EWG’s research highlights that the impact of PFAS extends far beyond our species.
The PFAS crisis is not limited to specific regions but is a global concern. Wildlife, like humans, are exposed to multiple PFAS through various means such as diet, air, water, and soil. The updated PFAS in wildlife map compiled by EWG showcases the alarming extent of contamination, with over 120 unique PFAS compounds detected in 625 animal species across the world. This contamination affects a wide range of animals, from fish and birds to large mammals like horses and polar bears, and even small mammals like cats, some of which are already endangered or threatened.
Studies analyzed by EWG reveal that PFAS exposure has detrimental effects on wildlife. For instance, research on North Carolina alligators indicates a correlation between elevated PFAS levels and increased occurrences of skin lesions, slow-healing wounds, and infections. Similarly, sea turtles in the North Pacific show vulnerability to PFAS at all stages of their development, from eggs to immune systems. These findings raise serious concerns about the health of animals exposed to PFAS, considering that PFAS are known to accumulate in their bodies and do not break down in the environment.
Given the extensive reach of PFAS contamination, there is an urgent need for action to mitigate its impact. Tasha Stoiber, a senior scientist at EWG, warns that common methods used to address PFAS contamination may inadvertently lead to further Pollution, potentially affecting more species, including humans. To safeguard both wildlife and human health, there is a pressing need to halt nonessential uses of PFAS and address industrial Pollution sources.
