A rumor that pets are being stolen and eaten by Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, has caused chaos in the town, with JD Vance at the center of the controversy. Vance’s campaign, attempting to validate the claims, shared a police report involving a missing cat, Miss Sassy, to the Wall Street Journal. The report was used to suggest that pets in the area were at risk. However, the story quickly unraveled when the cat’s human, Anna Kilgore, revealed her pet had simply been hiding in the basement all along.
Kilgore apologized to her Haitian neighbors after discovering Miss Sassy was safe at home. The rumor, however, has continued to spread. Springfield, a city of 58,000 people, has been in turmoil since the claims surfaced, fueled in part by Donald Trump. During a debate with Kamala Harris, Trump repeated the unfounded allegation that dogs were being eaten by immigrants in the town.
Springfield’s Mayor, Rob Rue, a Republican, has asked Trump not to visit the city, fearing the chaos and safety threats might overwhelm local authorities. The town has already faced over 30 bomb threats and general unrest due to the baseless rumors. Despite repeated statements from officials calling the allegations groundless, Trump and Vance have continued to use the claims as part of their attack on Harris’ immigration policy.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has dismissed the rumors as nonsense, while Trump’s campaign has shifted focus to other issues in Springfield, such as rising rents and public safety concerns.
