Three major medical research funding organizations – BMA Foundation, Medical Research Scotland, and The Dunhill Medical Trust – have pledged to cease funding experiments involving the controversial forced swim test. This decision follows extensive advocacy efforts by PETA.
The forced swim test, a method criticized for its ethical and scientific flaws, involves placing small animals such as rats and mice into containers of water from which they cannot escape. Researchers then observe the animals’ attempts to find a way out, under the mistaken belief that their behavior could provide insights into human mental health conditions. After the test, the animals are typically euthanized. The test has been widely discredited, with the Home Office recently declaring an end to its use for studying depression and anxiety, and plans to eliminate it in the UK are underway.
Dr. Julia Baines, PETA’s Senior Science Policy Manager, praised the funding bodies for their decision, stating, “Forcing terrified animals to swim for their lives is both cruel and bad science, and sensible funding bodies rightly don’t want to waste critical time and money on tests that do nothing to advance human medicine.”
Numerous prominent institutions, including the universities of Brighton, Exeter, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, and Southampton, along with King’s College London and Newcastle University, have publicly declared their stance against using the forced swim test. Despite this growing consensus, some institutions, like the University of Bristol, continue to use the test, positioning them as exceptions in the academic community.
PETA, committed to ending all forms of animal exploitation, continues to advocate for the abandonment of speciesist practices in scientific research. For further information on PETA’s campaigns, visit PETA.org.uk.
