Lion Cub Rescued from Lebanon’s Conflict Finds Hope in South Africa

When Sara, a young lion cub, came under the care of Animals Lebanon, she was in a dire state. Her health was failing, and she bore the physical signs of neglect, including a serious ringworm infection. The cub had been used as a social media prop by her owner in Baalbek, Lebanon, despite local laws banning private ownership of exotic animals.

The rescue mission began after Sara was spotted in viral videos on TikTok and Instagram. The organization took legal action, which led to the owner surrendering her in September 2023. The timing was critical, as the escalating conflict in the region between Hezbollah and Israel made the rescue even more dangerous. Sara was relocated to Beirut just weeks before Baalbek became the target of airstrikes.

Sara’s original relocation plan to South Africa in October was delayed when airlines suspended operations in Lebanon due to the intensifying conflict. In the meantime, Animals Lebanon continued its work, caring for displaced pets and animals impacted by the violence. Despite the chaos, Sara thrived in her temporary home, gaining strength and weight under the dedicated care of her rescuers.

Eventually, through international donations, a complex evacuation plan was executed. Sara traveled by yacht to Cyprus, flew to the UAE, and finally arrived in Cape Town, South Africa. There, she will be monitored and integrated with two other lions previously rescued from Lebanon. Jason Mier, the executive director of Animals Lebanon, expressed hope for her future, noting that this was the best outcome for her.
